Lecture 9 from the “Gender and Sexuality Studies” Course
Abstract:
This lecture provides an overview of the emergence and the development of two key social movements, one focusing on gender and the other on sexuality. The goal of this lecture is to examine the complex relationships between these movements, using multiple methodologies within social movement theories with a special focus on the New Social Movements theories (NSM). The first section of the presentation delves into the historical origins and growth of gender-based social movements. It looks at significant episodes in feminist history, from early feminist movements to current gender equality activism. Concurrently, the lecture goes into the growth of sexuality-based social movements, tracing their origins and evaluating landmarks such as the Stonewall riots. The audience will acquire insights into how these movements have influenced and shaped one another over time, generating a deeper understanding of the complex processes that govern social change in the realms of gender and sexuality. Finally, the lecture will discuss critical approaches in studying social movements based on gender and sexuality issues in different contexts.
