Lecture 5 from the “Gender and Sexuality Studies” Course
Equality between men and women is one of the leading questions in sociology. Although absent from early sociological texts, the topic of inequalities between men and women became extremely relevant in the 20th century as a result of the industrial economy, military conflicts, and social movements for equality. In the fifth lecture of the course, basic sociological concepts about the influence of politics, media, and labor on inequalities between men and women will be examined. The main objectives of the lecture are: (1) to examine, in a comparative perspective, the role of politics in the reproduction and control of gender stereotypes and inequalities; (2) to present the basic concepts that examine the ways in which the media reproduce and reinforce inequalities between men and women and the policies to overcome them; and (3) to present basic concepts about the role of work practices and relationships in the process of gender socialization and their impact on gender inequalities.
